Black Joy
A Curated Celebration of Resistance, Rest, and Radiance
June 21 - July 19, 2025
BAM Community Education Gallery (Ground floor)
Opening Reception Saturday, June 21 | 6–9 PM (details below)
ELEVATE is proud to present Black Joy, a powerful, immersive art exhibition opening on Saturday, June 21 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. This show is a vibrant and unapologetic celebration of the Black experience — in all its beauty, softness, resistance, and resilience.
In a world often overshadowed by systemic injustice and generational trauma, Black Joy asserts itself as a radical act of liberation. It defies oppression, dismantles stereotypes, and centers the richness of everyday Black life. This exhibition invites viewers to witness and feel the power of joy as a healing force — one that restores, uplifts, and connects. Featuring work from local Black artists across mediums — from painting and photography to sculpture, sound, and installation — the exhibit explores the question: What does Black joy look like, feel like, sound like — in your world, your memories, your body?
Each piece showcased is a personal or collective expression — abstract or literal, loud or quiet — and rooted in truth. Through themes of identity, softness, beauty, pleasure, rest, and celebration, Black Joy becomes a textured journey into what it means to thrive. “This show is about more than happiness,” says curator Fancy Vargas. “It’s about reclaiming space. It’s about rest as resistance. It’s about being able to exhale. Black joy is radical — and it’s necessary.”
